Description:
English Staffordshire circular plate decorated with a dark blue transfer print, with "I HALL / QUADRUPEDS" printed in underglaze dark blue and an impressed mark "10" on the underside. Originally in partnership with Ralph Hall in two potteries from about 1802 to 1822, John Hall continued to operate Sytch Pottery, which he may have operated alone after 1814 until 1832, using "I. HALL" or "I. HALL & SONS." The "Quadrepeds" series were animal studies by John Hall, which are marked with the series title, "Quadrepeds" in an angular cartouche, but do not have individual titles. According to Tim Holdaway's article, Sources of Design - Animal Patterns pp. 34-37 in True Blue, Hall copied the vast majority of prints from "A Cabinet of Quadrupeds" (1805) by John Church, although some of the prints are from "The General History of Quadrupeds" (1790) by Thomas Bewick and drawings for Aesop's Fables by Samuel Howitt. The designs have the featured animal in the central circular panels, such as this one with a lion under a palm tree stalking an antelope-like animal and a mountain in the background; with four scrolled medallions depicting four additional animals such as these stags, horses, zebras, and goats, each separated by vase and flower motifs. The E.H. Williams 1838 probate inventory listed: "32 Blue plates... 1.50."
