Description: Woman's two-piece black lace dress with matching cape or shawl (89.080). The machine-stitched bodice is overlaid with machine-made lace, has 12 crocheted buttons down the front shaped sleeves, and is lined with tan cotton with a button front. The skirt is constructed of lace over black twill silk, and a bustle back with a slight train. The dress was a gift of Parker Dole Hubbard (1919-1994), son of George Caleb Hubbard (b.1878) and Florence Graves Hubbard, grandson of Parker Dole Hubbard (1825-1895) and Elizabeth Newton Hubbard (1842-1915), great-grandson of Ashley Hubbard and Betsey Dole Hubbard (1794-1862), and great-great grandson of Caleb Hubbard (1754-1850) and Lucretia Ashley Hubbard (1767-1853) of the Plumtrees section of Sunderland, Mass. This dress was probably not worn for mourning, as lace, cut velvet and satin were three fabrics not deemed proper. The box in which the dress and shawl were housed when they came to the museum was labeled "BENJAMIN SIDE TEL. CONN./ B & R Dress Co./ MANUFACTURERS OF COATS AND DRESSES/ WEST BROOKFIELD, MASS./ Branch - 18 Center Street., Northampton, Mass."
