Similar scenes are found on both English and American needlework. The companion picture of the Shepherd has a red brick building typical of New England architecture and a red-winged bird which are features found on other similar American needlework pieces from the Boston area from around the period 1723-1780. Boston area schools were advertising lessons in pastoral needleworks, many based on English prints, but with design alterations distinguishing them from typical English needleworks portraying castles, etc. The Shepherdess is seated in a flowering landscape, and is wearing a straw hat and red and white gown, holding a crook in her right arm and flowers in her left hand as four sheep group around her in the foreground; thre is an oak tree in the left background and large flowering plant with a dragonfly on the right.
