Description:
Needlework sampler done in silk embroidery on a plain linen ground, which has the inscription, "Patty Boltwood / 1795" in a cartouche in the center top flanked by two flowers and two fruit baskets. Martha (nicknamed Patty) Boltwood (1778-1867) was the daughter of Samuel Boltwood (1754-1808) and Judith Nash Boltwood (1756-1832) of Amherst and Conway, Massachusetts, and married John Arms (1774-1856) of Conway in 1800, and had 14 children. The sampler has four rows of the alphabet and one row of numbers and flowers; over the verse, "Attend to Virtue's Voice / Let Virtue be my choice / From Virtue never stray / But Virtue's law obey." over a two-story house with seven windows and two doors flanked by flowers and trees, all enclosed in frame-like border; over a large flower basket in the bottom center, flowers, and a black dog and bird. The sampler has a meandering vine and leaf border along the two sides, and is done in cross, stem, satin and New England-laid stitches. The colors remaining include black, green, brown, and neutrals, all of which were probably more vibrant.
