Description:
One of two cup plates with a press-molded body in white with gilt foliate and line decoration. Cup plates were used when tea was drunk from saucers. After the tea was poured from the cup to the saucer, the cup was placed on a cup plate in order to prevent the tea from staining the tablecloth. The set, which includes a teapot, four plates, six dishes, and two cup plates, belonged to the donor's aunt who married in 1900; the set had been in her husband's family who lived in Bennington, Vermont, where one of the family worked at the Bennington Pottery. The donor broke the large sugar bowl.
