Description:
Woman's natural straw coal scuttle bonnet with silk ribbon trim. Bonnet body is constructed of fine straw plait (6 strands) sewn into a spiral from the back of the crown. Crown and brim are made in one continuous piece. Straw bavolet (1.5", 10 rows of plait) is continuous with front edge of brim. Edge of brim is wired (wire is underneath silk lining) and finished with a white silk cord around the entire brim. Lining fabric is white/ecru netting (tulle) gathered over dark pink silk taffeta. Evidence of crinoline lining (once entirely lined?). Outside of bonnet is trimmed with silk ribbon (2.25" wide)-ribbons are shaded vertically red to black, with a horizontal pattern woven into it in red and white, and has a piqued edge. This ribbon criss crosses the bonnet over the top, wrapping under the crown near the bavolet and tucking under edge of brim on both sides. Lobes of this ribbon resembling bows decorate outside (6 lobes on right, 5 on left). Inside trimming: Dark pink silk ribbon arranged in 6 lobes, with bunched white tulle, tacked to brim about 2" in from edge near the cheeks. Ribbon is 1" wide with a white fringe edge. Two types of ribbon ties: wide yellow and orange (woven in a square pattern) silk 20x3", and shorter sheer red with satin grey/blue vertical lines 11x1".
