Description:
German earthenware straight-sided mug with attached loop handle and flat base and decorated with transfer printing. This mug is an example of common German, printed ceramics, which wares were poor imitations of finer English printed ceramics. The interior of mug is printed in overglaze red enamel with a stippled border of leaves and flowers; the exterior has similar decoration with two vignettes, one of a tea drinking scene and the other of a shepherd. The underside of base is printed in red enamel: "Royal / crown and mantle with cipher "JAL" ? and the numbers "1155"; and "Bonn / THEETRINKER / GERMANY." The white label attached to base reads: "Mrs. Frederic E. Jones / The Ridge / Orford, NH 03777."
