Description: English ironstone plate with a painted blue shell border, which has the printed mark of "IRONSTONE / JOHN MEIR & SON / ENGLAND" on the base. Marks that include "'ENGLAND" were used after 1891 to comply with the American McKinley Tariff, which required the country of origin to be marked on imported pieces. Manufacturers of earthenware at Tunstall as "John Meir" from about 1812-18 and "John Meir & Son" from about 1837-1897, John Meir & Son used this printed mark, which incorporates the Royal Arms, from about 1891 to 1897.
This firm produced a good range of printed earthenware and ironstone, much of which was exported
