Description:
English ironstone plate with a painted blue shell border, which has the printed mark of "WILLIAM ADAMS & CO. TUNSTALL ENGLAND." on the base. Marks that include "'ENGLAND" were used after 1891 to comply with the American McKinley Tariff, which required the country of origin to be marked on imported pieces. Williams Adams & Co. used this printed mark used from about 1893 into the early 1900's. Variations occur with a crown on top of the globe instead of the eagle, with and without "TUNSTALL" and/or "ENGLAND." The lozenge-shaped "diamond mark" in its center indicates that the design was regstered with the British Patent Office on January 21,1881.
