Description: Slat-back side chair (second chair - 87.012 - auctioned) in cherry and maple attributed to Felix Huntington (1749-1822), which descended in the Howard family of Hampton, Connecticut. Another chair from this set is owned by The Connecticut Historical Society; and HD has a pair of higher-style side chairs (2039 and 2039A) that were also probably made by Felix Huntington in Norwich. It is likely that the same templates were used to saw out the crest rails and rear stiles in both sets of chairs. This style of chair may have been called a "three back chair" when it were new, referring to the number of horizontal slats in the back. The chair has a serpentine crest rail and small, two-lobed ears; over two shaped stiles on each side of two straight rails; a slip seat with the original striped haircloth seat cover and under upholstery; and box stretcher base and applied quarter arch brackets.
