Description:
Copperplate-printed cotton fragment with rural scenes of people in blue and white, which was tacked to wooden batten at top and bottom (sticks removed). The Art Institute of Chicago has has a similar textile. Probably produced with China Blue indigo, a process whereby indigo can be printed directly onto cloth using engraved or etched copper plates, Prior to the inventionof China Blue in the mid-18th century, indigo could only be applied to cloth from a dye vat and resist method in which the cloth would be immersed.
