Description:
Needlework sampler done in silk embroidery cross stitch on a plain-weave linen with the inscription, "Frances Stebbins AE 11." Frances Stebbins (b.1812) was the daughter of Asa Stebbins (1767-1844) and Emelia Harvey Stebbins (1769-1841) of Deerfield, and married Gardner G. Smith of St. Albans, Vermont, in 1833. The sampler has eight rows of the alphabet, and the numbers, 1-11. It is possible that this piece, in the form of what is known as a band sampler, was Frances' first sampler, before she tackled a more ambitious second needlework project. See the more ornate and pictorial sampler, HD 86.086, made by her sister, Marietta Stebbins (1791-1820).
