Description:
Linen sheet in a fine weave with an ink inscription, "Hannah D. Bardwell No. 15" on one end. The donor thought that the sheet was made by Hannah Bardwell (b.1799) who was the daughter of Gideon Hawks (b.1754) of Bardwell's Ferry, granddaughter of Hannah Hawks Bardwell (1735-1799, daughter of Nathanial Hawks of Deerfield), and married Horace Hawks. However, it is more likely to be the Hannah D. Bardwell (d.1874) listed in George Sheldon (Vol. II, p. 394, #8) who was the daughter of Elijah Bardwell of Hatfield, and married Asahel Wright (1806-1875), a farmer in Wapping, in 1837. The sheet is made of two widths of cloth, 42" wide seamed at the selvage with 1/4" hem at each end. One corner has the hem cut at an angle and rehemmed about 1 1/2" in both directions.
