Description: Linen sheet in a tabby weave. The sheet was woven by Sarah Allis Hawks (1787-1873), daughter of William Allis of Hatfield, who married Quartus Hawks (1778-1842) of Wapping in 1808. The sheet descended in the Hawks family from Quartus' son, Horatio (1819-1865), to his grandson, Dwight Allis (b.1848), then great-grandson, Paul (b.1891), and then great-great granddaughter, Mary Hawks. The sheet is made of two widths of cloth, seamed at the selvage with 1/4" hem at each end. One large piece is torn from one edge and the rest of the area is heavily mended, There are a few threads on the shet that were left on the edge, apporximately 6" from the hem indicating previous cross-stitched markings.
