Description:
Leather-covered wooden box with a brass name plate inscribed "T. Leavitt" in the center of the top, a leather handle, and brass nails around the edges in a rectangle in the center of the top, lock plate, with a light green paper with dark blue dots attached to the interior bottom and other paper with blue lines around the sides. T. Leavitt was a doctor in Hollis, New Hampshire in the 1820-1830's, and used the box to keep scales, boxes, drugs, etc. There is a label inside the cover: "Saddlery/ and Military Cap Establishment./ John B. Baker,/Saddles, Bridles, Harnesses, Whips, Travelling Trunks, House Trunks, Valises, Carpet Bags, Hat Cases, Bonnet Cases, Engine Hose, Fire Buckets, Military Caps, Knapsacks, Cartridge Boxes, Belts, &c. &c./ No. 12 Court Street, Boston." Boston city directories cite John B. Baker at No. 2 Elm Street for the years 1835 and 1836, and later at 12 Court St.. In the early 20th century, Noble, a dealer in Wells, Maine, and friend of Wallace Nutting, gave the box to his daughter, Irene Noble Harmon, who later gave it to the donor while he was in high school.
