One of two Sheraton side chairs with needlepoint seats made by Eleanor Barnard Conrad Carson (1886-1950) (see photograph, 2002.25.1). According to family tradition, the chairs descended from Charles Barnard (1781-1869), to his daughter, Anne Middleton Barnard Davis (1821-1978) of Winchester, Virginia; to her daughter, Susan Lyman Davis Conrad (1844-1927) of Winchester; to her daughter, Eleanor Barnard Conrad Carson of Winchester; to her daughter, Susan Davis Carson Hedrick (1909-1987), mother of John Adam Hedrick who donated other Barnard family pieces in the HD collection. Charles Barnard was the son of Samuel Barnard (1746-1819) and Abigail Upham Barnard (4 Jan. 1745/46-1826) who moved the family from the Manse on Main Street, Deerfield, to Montgomery, Vermont, in 1795 after financial difficulties. Charles Barnard became a very successful merchant in Boston and had a house in Milton, Massachusetts, similar in architecture to the Manse in Deerfield, which is now known as the Upton House of Milton Academy. The chair has a molded square back with bow crest rail; over four four vertical splats toped with flared acanthus carved terminals on a stippled background, over a central carved rosette; over a trapezoidal seat; over fluted and tapered front legs joined by a plain H-shaped stretcher. There are similar examples in the Worcester Art Museum and Salisbury Mansion in Worcester, Massachusetts.
