Description: Textile printed in 1952 from the printing blocks HD 82.016-.018 from Bannister Hall Collection. The three carved wooden printing blocks (HD 82.016-.018) are decorated with elaborate floral and foliate sprays and made of four layers of wood (2 maple, 2 pine) and with six nails. Banister Hall, in operation from 1799 until 1840, was a source of early 19th-century printed cottons. Located in Preston, south of Lancaster in Lancashire County, it was a less-expensive area for such an endeavor than central London. There were also many rivers are sources of water power in this area to aid in their printing efforts. Banister Hall received orders from diverse groups, including linen drapers wishing to offer novel decorative patterns to customers. Banister Hall printers appear to have engaged in block-, plate-, and cylinder-printing.
