Description:
English pearlware waste bowl covered with slip decoration, also known as mocha, banded, or dipped/dipt ware. These ceramics were very common, and cheap forms were used in kitchens and taverns in America in the late 18th and early 19th century. This type of dendritic decoration was achieved by placing a drop of mocha tea (stale urine, tobacco spit) on the slip surface. The tree-like patterns appear immediately. The bowl was wheel-thrown and then turned on a lathe. The rim has cylindrical incised bands, or dicing, covered with copper green oxide slip; over a wide brown band with five dark-brown dendritic (or tree-like) patterns around the middle of the band, flanked by two narrow dark brown bands. Formerly in the collection of John B. Morris Jr, given to Deerfield Academy (#1911/4086a), and purchased by HD in 1982.
