Description: English creamware, boat-shaped compotier (part of a larger dessert service) with a wavy, green shell-edged rim, with an impressed "Neale & Co" and a painted "C" on the base. The Neale & Co. mark was the standard impressed mark used by the factory. It is probable that this mark was used through the 'Neale & Wilson' & 'Neale & Bailey' partnerships, so it would be used to c.1814. Operated by Humphrey Palmer from about 1759, the Church Works pottery in Hanley was taken over by James Neale (1739/40-1814) in 1778 and managed by Robert Wilson (d.1801); Wilson was a partner by 1783 and bought out Neale by 1792, operating the pottery by himself. Formerly in the collection of John B. Morris, the compotier was given to Deerfield Academy (#858), and then purchased by HD in 1982.
