Description:
Large English creamware mug covered with slip decoration, also known as mocha, banded, or dipped ware. The mug has a cylindrical body with straight sides, slightly jutted foot, and an applied ribbed, strap handle. Marbled slip decoration covers the body in shades of dark brown, tan, and reddish brown, except for lip, foot, and handle. Cream-colored earthenware sprigged or applied neo-classical swags of husks and flowers surround the body 2/3 of distance up from the base. On the top quarter of the mug, there is a single incised mottled band that does not connect around the body. The mug was wheel-thrown, then turned on a lathe to trim the body, then the slip was applied, and finally the handle and sprig decoration. This piece was formerly in the collection of John B. Morris, Jr., given to Deerfield Academy (#2943), and then purchased from DA in 1981.
