Description: English pearlware, cylindrical spill vase or spill holder covered with slip decoration, also known as mocha, banded, or dipped ware. The vase was wheel-thrown and then turned on a lathe. It has a concave body, with a flared rim and base. The rim and base have cylindrical incised bands, or dicing, covered with copper green oxide slip. The body has a tortoiseshell slip, or combed marbled slip, in shades of dark brown, tan, white, and reddish brown. The green glaze is added to the lead glaze after the biscuit firing. This piece was formerly in the collection of John B. Morris, Jr., given to Deerfield Academy (#1812), and then purchased from DA in 1981.
