Description:
English creamware, cylindrical mug covered with slip decoration, also known as mocha, banded, or dipped ware. The mug was wheel-thrown and then turned on a lathe. The checkered band are rouletted - rolled into the greenware with a tool like a pie crimper. The rest of the geometric design is engine-turned, scooping out the clay in a precise pattern. The mug is then dipped in black slip, dried and returned to the lathe; the excess slip is shaved away, leaving the black slip only in the engined recesses. Then the reeded bands are cut in using a comb-like tool, and the additional slip bands are added, all on the lathe. The green glaze is added to the lead glaze after the biscuit firing. This piece was formerly in the collection of John B. Morris, Jr., given to Deerfield Academy (#1668/663), and then purchased from DA in 1981.
