Description:
English pearlware, cylindrical mug covered with slip decoration, also known as mocha, banded, or dipped ware. The mug was wheel-thrown and then turned on a lathe. The rim has cylindrical incised bands, or dicing, covered with copper green oxide slip, surrounded by brown bands. The ribbed, strap handle and molded flat foot with two pairs of incised bands are plain. The center band has an orange background with looped tan, blue-green, and brown swirls combining cat's eye, earthworm, and seashell motifs - a pattern known as cable, common cable or "worm". There are two brown bands over the molded base. This piece was formerly in the collection of John B. Morris, Jr., given to Deerfield Academy (#671), and then purchased from DA in 1981.
