Description:
English pearlware, cylindrical mug covered with slip decoration, also known as mocha, banded, or dipped ware. The mug was wheel-thrown and then turned on a lathe. The rim and base have cylindrical incised bands, or dicing, covered with copper green oxide slip. The ribbed, strap handle is plain. The main body has a tortoiseshell slip (also known as combed slip marbling) in shades of dark brown, tan, white, and reddish brown. This piece was formerly in the collection of John B. Morris, Jr., given to Deerfield Academy (#1867/671), and then purchased from DA in 1981.
