Description:
English creamware pint mug with an applied ribbed, strap handle ending in a foliate terminal, and covered with slip decoration, also known as variegated or dipped ware. The base is faintly impressed "WEDGWOOD & CO" for Ralph Wedgwood (1766-1837), the eldest son of Thomas Wedgwood (1734-1788), the cousin and partner of Josiah Wedgwood (1735-1795). After the death of his father in 1788, Ralph and his eldest brother Samuel took over the Hill or Hill Top Works; after Samuel's death in 1790, Ralph continued there alone, making creamware and stonewares in imitation of Josiah Wedgwood's and using the mark, "WEDGWOOD & CO." The Hill Works were sold in 1788, and Ralph moved to Ferrybridge, Yorkshire, where he continued to make creamware, pearlware and jasper in the Wedgwood style, in partnership with William Tomlinson and John Foster until the end of 1800 when the partnership was dissolved. The full name of this partnership was Tomlinson, Wedgwood, Foster & Co., but they also used shortened form of "WEDGWOOD & CO" presumably to profit from the famous Wedgwood name. There are three other mugs known with identical gilding, potting features, slip colors, and impressed mark: One in the Jonathan Rickard Collection (now in the Collection of the Potteries Museum in Hanley); the second in the Minnie Holdaway Collection, London; and the third in a private collection. The body of the mug, which was wheel-thrown and then turned on a lathe, is covered with a marbelized or "end paper" slip in brown, black, tan, rust, grey, and cream, and has gilt bands around the rim and base. This piece was formerly in the collection of John B. Morris, Jr., given to Deerfield Academy (#2115/671), and purchased from DA in 1981.
