Description:
Bough pots, usually produced in pairs or as sets of three, became a popular mantelpiece ornament in the late 18th century. English pearlware, semi-circular bough pot with insert decorated in overglaze orange and black enamel. Bough pots, usually produced in pairs or as sets of three, became a popular mantlepiece ornament in the late 18th century. Removable inserts with several holes were placed inside the pot making it easier to arrange cut flowers or branches. By about 1790, this popular semi-circular form was made by most factories. The insert has eight holes in a "W" shape to hold the boughs or flowers; there is a black line bordering each hole and the outside edge. The body has a transfer print scene of a classical country house standing in its own park with trees, water, boats, and birds, and three people in the background and two workers raking with a basket in the foreground. The top section of the body has a fluted band, with a painted scalloped edge around the top, two lines bordering the scene, a line around the base, and lines around each of the three bun feet. This piece was formerly in the collection of John B. Morris, Jr., given to Deerfield Academy (#107/9297), and then purchased from DA in 1981.
