Description:
Brownish-tan stoneware jug stamp-impressed: E. ORCUTT & CO / LANSING BURGH" in-filled with cobalt blue, and over a blue flower extending from a leaf on a S-shaped stem. Eleazer Orcutt (b.1796), member of the Orcutt family of potters in Whately and Ashfield, Massachusetts, along with his brother, Walter (1799-1854), worked in several locations, including Poughkeepsie, New York from 1830-1831 with William Reynolds; in Troy, New York, by himself from 1823-1830 and with Israel Seymour from 1833-1834; Portland, Maine, from 1835-1836; in Lansingburgh, NY, from 1843-1848; and finally in Albany, New York, from 1853 til his death. The jug has a narrow mouth, oncised line around the neck, strap handle attached to the spout, curved shoulders, straight sides, and a flat base.
