Description:
Painted enamel plaque in a black composition frame with a brass oak leaf/acorn hanger. The scene is a classical pastoral landscape in blue, green, brown, black, purple, beige, and orange-red with a classical ruin, obelisk, river, trees, mountains, and some people including a shepard. According Miss Josephine Starr, the plaque was purchased in Italy in the 1870's by Eliza Ann Allen Starr (1824-1901), whom George Sheldon describes as "..sett. in Chicago; artist, author, lecturer, teacher; has published several volumes of poetry and prose." In 1768, Caleb Allen (1737-1807), son of Samuel Allen (1702-1746) of the Bars, married Judith Hawks (1745-1819), daughter of Eliezer Hawks (1717-1746) and Margaret Allen (d.1772). Caleb and Judith had eight children, the two youngest of whom were Caleb (1781-1814) and Lovina (1786-1864) Allen; Lovina married Oliver Allen Starr (1791-1870) in 1821. Oliver and Lovina had four children, including Eliza Ann Allen and Caleb Allen Starr (b.1822) who moved from Deerfield to Durand, Illinois, in 1855. Four family silhouettes (HD 77.070 - 77.073) also descended from Caleb Allen Starr to Josephine Starr.
