Description:
Empire sofa with scrolled handholds supported on turned posts, straight top and bottom rails, two spiral-turned legs with castors in front,and two plain, out-curved rear legs; the purple horsehair covering was installed in May, 1993. The sofa probably belonged Asa Stebbins Jr. (1800-1864) of Deerfield and then his son, Francis Ward Stebbins (1829-1906), for whom Asa bought the E. H. Willliams House in 1852. Francis Ward Stebbins left the sofa in the house when he moved in 1866; the house and sofa descended in the Cowles famly and the sofa was given to HD in 1976 along with two side chairs, 76.283A & B.
