Description: Needlework sampler done in silk embroidery on a plain-weave linen ground, which has the inscription "Wrought by Permelia Allen AG 10 years" and five rows of the alphabet and the numbers 1-9, over a large basket of flowers resting on a scrolling, flowering branch. Pamelia Allen (1813-1882) was the granddaughter of Samuel Hinsdale (1741-1825) of Greenfield who married Mary Stebbins Hinsdale (1749-1830), the daughter of Benjamin Stebbins of Belchertown, Massachusetts, in 1772; and the daughter of Mary Hinsdale (b.1782) (see her sampler, HD 76.016) who married Samuel Allen (b.1781), the son of Ebenezer Allen (b.1754) of Greenfield who moved to Waterbury, Vermont, in 1800. Samuel had moved from Greenfield to Chelsea, Vermont. According to handwritten notes by Sarah Weeks Foss (see her photograph and handwritten notes in data field), Pamelia married Benjamin Foss in 1837, and the sampler descended to their son Henry Dow Foss (1843-1906) who married Sarah Weeks (1851-1886) in 1869. Both Henry and Sarah Foss died in Springfield, Massachusetts.
