Description: Whitish-grey bodied, baluster-shaped stoneware jar stamp-impressed "S. RISLEY NORWICH / 3" in-filled with cobalt blue. Trained as a potter in East Hartford, Connecticut, Sidney Risley (1814-1875) Risley established a stoneware manufactury in buildings on Yantic Cove (on Cove Street) in Norwich around 1836 until his death April 26, 1875. Stoneware marked "S. Risley / Norwich" is often found in eastern Connecticut and indeed throughout New England. The "Norwich Almanac" of 1846 announced that he was "manufacturing exclusively Stone Ware of the very best quality." His son, George Risley succeeded him, but died in an expolsion at the pottery in 1881. The jar has a round lip, two incised lines around the neck, a C-shaped lug handle (one lug handle is missing and the other is chipped), and beveled base. There are chips around mouth. A cover (73.092A) that came with the jar does not fit.
