Description: Chinese export porcelain round plate decorated with the arms of the De Wendt family of Friesland, who bore them this way from the second half of the 17th century, in the Famille rose palatte in blue, white, pink, iron red, green, black, gilding, and silver. Both the brothers, Eyso de Wendt (1718-1780) and Gerard Beilanus de Wendt (1712-1788) commissioned Chinese export porcelain services; this plate is probably from the service ordered by Eyso de Wendt. The brothers were from a family that formed part of the urban patrriciate of Freisland from the second half of the 17th century, and both joined the V.O.C., amassing large fortunes in the East Indies. Eyso went from working as a clerk in Surat to becoming a supercargo or director of the factory in Canton from 1753-1757. He returned to Holland in 1762, a very wealthy man. The coat of arms is in an asymetrical shield surrounded by rococo style ornaments of rocailles, shell, branches, scrollwork, etc. The arms are on a blue background, a white (silver) fleur-de-lis with a red rose or featherhead above; the crest a similar fleur-de-lis between two 'rouge de fer' ostrich feather. The upper edge of the curvature has a gilt and tarnished silver Meissen-like scroll border; the rim has gilt band of scrolls and shells and a gilt edge.
