Description:
Small trunk covered with leather, which was owned by Colonel Elihu Hoyt (1777-1833). According to George Sheldon, "Elihu, son of David... col. of militia; an important man in his generation; was in the legislature as rep. or senator or in the council every year save three from 1803 to his death in 1833; in consitutional convention 1820; was long county commissioner and much employed in minor offices of trust and honor; he was born and lived in the "Old Indian House" and published a "Brief History of Dfd., to supply the demand for information fr. the swarms of curious visitors.." The trunk is covered on the exterior with worn "moroccan" leather decorated with gold tooling. The interior is lined with folio proof pages (uncut) from an ecclesiastical work, probably printed in England in the 18th century, printed over with a series of purple diagonal lines forming diamond shapes. The cypher of King George II (reigned 1727-1760) is visible on the lid. Mrs. Henry King Hoyt of Deerfield (born Catherine Wells, 1805-1891) gift to PVMA, listed in the Picture and Manuscript Room as: "40. Morocco Trunk. Contained the papers of Col. Elihu Hoyt, 1777-1833."
