Description:
Pair of pattens that were a form of clogs with leather uppers and the wooden sole usually raised 1" or 1 1/2" off the ground on an oval iron ring (this particular pair raises the wearer 1.25"). By the 17th century, pattens were used to keep feet free from mud and slush. The leather upper is missing from one, and the other has a 19th century leather upper replacement secured with 19th century nails. The oval iron bases are attached to the wooden soles with wrought nails.
