Description: Chinese export porcelain octagonal plate decorated in the Famille rose palette of yellow, rose, green, turquoise, black, iron red, and gilding. The plate has a floral bouquet of pink poppies and purple mallows tied with a cord surrounded by flying insects and birds. The double gilt chain around the well is interrupted by the coat of arms of Hardwicke, with a crest, "A stag statant (usually currant), over the arms, "Argent, a saltire engrailed azure, on a chief of the second three roses if the first" at the top of the rim. There are floral sprigs, exotic birds, and shells around the rim. The Hardwickes were originally of Hardwicke in Derbyshire and lived in Staffordshire since the 14th century. This service was possibly made for Captain Peter Hardwicke of the East Indiaman, "Earl of Lincoln, " who was in Canton in 1764, 1767, and 1769 (one of the ealiest occasions on which a biennial journey was made).
