Description: Chinese export porcelain white or blanc-de-Chine candlestick. The form is based on popular European silver forms that were also made in brass, pewter, and paktong. Beginning around 1700, the Chinese made candlesticks in many varieties, all based on European examples, which usually formed parts of dinner services of about 200 pieces or more. According to Christiaan Jörg, a set with 525 pieces made for the Dutch market in 1764 included 12 candlesticks. Over the years, candlesticks became separated from their sets, so to find a dinner service with its original examples is a true rarity. Separate candlesticks were seldom bought at least by the Dutch VOC; from 1730-1795, only 475 pieces were shipped to the Netherlands. This candlestick has a circular socket or candle cup with a molded rim, over a octagonal shaped knop and baluster stem, over a circular depression on the octagonal, flat stepped base with cut corners.
