Description:
Chinese export porcelain chocolate cup or coffee cup with a C-shaped handle decorated in iron red, yellow, green, purple, rose, black, blue, and gilding with large delicately painted floral vines with butterflies and insects and rose, blue, purple, iron red, and yellow flowers; the intertwined flowers and stems form the initials "J H C" on the side; and the rim edge has a gilt and iron-red spearhead border. Identifying a ceramic vessel for drinking chocolate is difficult since new fashions for drinking this beverage continually evolved over time. Chocolate was first served in tall, handless beakers with a slightly flared lip. Later, chocolate cups had one handle, two handles, and at times, a cover and saucer. Served with a foamy head, chocolate beverage needed a taller vessel for proper service.
