Description: English pearlware circular plate painted with an American eagle in blue, orange-red, green, brown, and black, which was made for the American market. The eagle design is a variant of the Great Seal of the United States adopted by the Continental Congress in 1782, which depicts a circular cloudband with 13 stars over an eagle with outstretched wings; red and white striped shield across the chest; banner with the motto, "E. Pluribus Unum" in the beak; and an olive branch in the right talon and 13 arrows in the left. Elements from the Seal were immediately used on coinage and business documents, which then provided design sources. The scalloped rim has a blue shell edge; and the well has thirteen stars over an eagle looking right with extended wings, holding sheaf of arrows in its right talon and an green olive branch in its left talon (reversed on the 1782 Seal), and a red-striped shield.
