Description:
Chinese export porcelain tile decorated with purple spray of flowers and leaves in a banded, wicker basket in the center, and a stylized flower-like shape in each corner. This is an unusual tile in that it is a contemporary Chinese copy of a Dutch and English delft tile design, also in purple. According to 1965 HD records, this example was one of originally 22 bought from D.M.& P. Manheim, NYC; one other was sold to John Mayer and the other 20 sold in a lot. John Mayer gave his tile to Winterthur in 1979 (acc. no. 70.425). Winterthur's "Guide to Chinese Export Porcelain" states that these tiles confirm written records that Dutch delft tiles were sent to China to be copied, and that the Chinese versions were probably sent to the East Indies, usually used in walls or fireplace surrounds or as stands for teapots and hot dishes.
