Description:
Chinese export porcelain octagonal plate with eight chamfered sides with the coat of arms of Fector impaling Lane, decorated in yellow-orange, blue, purple, white, green, iron red, pink, rose, black, and gilding. The crest is "A dove argent charged with a crescent holding in the beak a sprig of leaves proper." The unpublished arms of Fector, probably blazoned, "Quarterly vert and ermines, the first and fourth quarters each charged with two doves in pale argent, the upper holding a sprig of leaves or." The impaled coat of Lane, "Per pale azure and gules, three saltires argent," was used by the famiilies settled for generations in Devon, Herefordshire, and Buckinghamshire. The motto "FIDE. FELICES. FACTI" is in a rose banderole. The arms are encircled by band of purple dots between green and gilt lines; the same band is repeated twice around the gilt-edged rim, enclosing a rim border of purple and green foliate scrolls. The service was made for James Peter Fector, son of Peter Fector of Dover and Mary Minet who married in 1751. In 1783, James Fector married Francis Lane, daughter of Thomas Bateman Lane who was the Mayor of Dover in 1770. on June 6, 1814, the Tsar of Russia Alexander I, stayed at the Fector's house after landing at Dover on his way to London for discussions for a Peace Conference; this service was used at the banquet given in his honor.
