Description:
Mahogany lap or traveling desk with brass carrying handles on each side, and a cloth writing surface. Inside are compartments for papers, pens, and other writing materials. The drawer on the proper right side opens by removing the long pin holding the top side of the box. It was purportedly owned by Edmund Morewood of New York City (but a native of England). He gave it to his daughter Helen Grace when she married John Ferguson; they lived in Stanford, Conneticut, in the "Stone House." Their daughter inherited it, and then it went to their niece, Mrs. Grace Carroll Ferguson Dater. She left it to her son Mr. Walton F. Dater in 1962, who left it to his son Capt Walton Ferguson Dater, Jr., the great-great-great gransdon of Edmund Morewood and the 6th generation of his family to own it. The secondary wood is yellow-poplar.
