Description:
Small table in maple and pine with black paint and 12 delft tiles inset in the top. According to HD records and as recorded in Dean Fales, "Furniture of Historic Deerfield," the table was in the estate of Miss Christophia Leffington, a descendent of Philip Leffington of the Leffington Inn in Norwich, Connecticut. After being delivered to a grand-niece, the table was reworked under the supervision of Joseph Downs, who had the table stripped to the original black, removed a small shelf under the top added later, and reset the tiles (perhaps supplying one to match). In early 2001, Josh Lane, HD furniture curator, examined the table again, and consulted with eighteenth-century furniture expert Robert Trent. Without dismantling the table, they were unable to determine if it is authentic, based on their surface inspection of paint layers, oxidation, replacement parts, etc.

Subjects:
Pottery; glaze (coating by location)
