Description:
Wooden hoist which may have been used to elevate a foot inflamed by gout or a broken leg. Gouty joints are extremely tender to the touch, so that using a hoist would have minimized pressure. The hoist has an iron hook on top (with old red paint) for suspending it from a beam; turned wooden "leg" with an inserted rachetted "reel" with four 5 1/2" spokes; a leather strap attached to small internal diameter of reel and to the iron hook at the opposite end; rachets for locking the reel on the same side as the spoked handle; and an iron loop on the bottom.
