Description:
Chinese export porcelain platter decorated in blue, black, and gilding with a leopard's head crest over the initial "C" in script on a shield, which is almost certainly of Covert, "On a wreathe or and gules a leopard's face or." Although the family of Covert, descended from John Covert who was in command of the siege of Boulogne in 1558, were well known in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex, England, there is little record of them in the 18th century. This platter is from the last of four services of made for the Covert family, with the earlier three being circa 1755-1760; however, it is not known for whom any of these services were made. The rim has a blue and gilt trellis diaper border with posts and spearheads. The unglazed back is inscribed in pencil, "From Your Great Great Grandfather's House."
