Description:
Miniature quadruple silver plate teaset in a wooden box made for the set, with a label on the interior hinged lid that reads, "Manufactured by James W. Tufts, Boston / 1 So. Market St." The set consists of 1 teapot with cover, 1 sugar bowl with cover, 1 cream jug, 1 waste bowl, 6 teacups and 6 saucers, and six spoons (five spoons found during inventory on 10/26/04). James Walker Tufts (1835-1905) was a well-known soda fountain manufacturer in Boston who expanded his business in 1875 (incorporated in 1881) to include an extensive line of quadruple plated hollow wares. Tufts died in 1905, but his company continued producing silverplated wares until about 1915. Tufts is also know for establishing Pinehurst, North Carolina, which was his dream of a New England-style resort village halfway between Boston and Florida; he bought 5000 acres in the Sandhills in 1895, where he built the village and a golf course .
