Description: Chinese export porcelain "Libation Cup", standing on a small oval foot with a widely flared lip, molded in high relief with applied overglaze enamel colors. These so-called "libation" cups were made for ceremonial drinking, and they were modeled on rhinoceros-horn cups. They were brought back to Europe from the late 17th century onwards, and were sometimes mounted there as a basket with an ormolu lip of chased lappets and a swing handle. This shape was copied early by Meissen, and there is little doubt that pieces of this quality were brought in private cargo as novelties. It is thought that these cups may have had corresponding stands.
