Description: Sir John Pettus (1613-1690) was appointed by Cromwell as deputy-governor of the mines. His Fleta Minor is one of the most important 17th-century works on mining and metals. Book titled "Fleta Minor/ The/ LAWS/ and/ ART and Nature,/IN/ Knowing, Judging, Assaying, Fining, Refining/ and Inlarging the Bodies of confin'd/METALS." The text continues: "In Two Parts, The First contains Assays of Lazarus Erckern, Chief Prover (or Assay-Master General of the Empire of Germany) in V Books: originally written by him in the Teutonick and now translated into English. The Second contains Essays on Metallick Words, as a Dictionary to many pleasing Discourses. By Sir John Pettus, of Suffolk Kt. Of the Society for the Mines Royal. Illustrated with 44 Sculptures.
