Description:
Oval box with removable lid. The face of the lid is covered with plain weave linen, onto which is densely embroidered silk and metalic threads. The linen ground is completely covered in white silk (filling or satin stitch) badly deteriorated. Outlined in metallic thread is the figure of a woman, set within a landscape, surrounded by flowers, birds, and insects. Both the lid and the box itself are edged in metallic silver braid or trim. It is likely a professional embroiderer decorated the box, which is an example of more popular and affordable embroidered objects available for sale in 17th-century England or Europe.

Subjects:
Textile fabrics; Embroidery; Linen; polychrome; Silk
