Description:
Chinese export porcelain shallow octagonal plate decorated with the coat of arms of Ross of Balnagowan Castle in white, rose, black, green, blue, turquoise, iron red, peach, and gilding. The crest, "A hand holding a garland of laurel proper," is over the Ross arms, "Gules three lions rampant argent," flanked by two Ross supporters (two men in loin cloths holding clubs over their shoulders); and over the motto, "SPEM SUCCESSUS ALIT" (Success nourishes hope). David Howard has found 12 Chinese procelain services with the Ross of Balnagowan arms (see Howard's Vol I and Vol II). Howard thought that this service was made for Sir Charles Ross, one of 5 sons of Sir James Ross (d. 1760); Charles died unmarried in 1778, and was succeeded by his brother, Admiral John Ross. The service has both Chinese (both octagonal and shaped octagonal plates) and English replacements, probably made about 5 years apart. The plate has a gilt and black diamond double chain around the top of the well; the rim has 8 floral sprays.
