Description:
English pearlware molded sauceboat in the shape of a duck, decorated in "Prattware" colors of brown, green, and blue, after the potter, William Pratt, who developed the palette at his factory in Lane Delph, Staffordshire. These are the typical range of colors available for underglaze painted decoration, a palette limited to colors derived from metallic oxides that could withstand the heat of the glaze firing. The head, which acts as the handle, has a ribbed beak outlined in brown and an arched neck. The wings on the sides are outlined and highlighted in blue, the body is accented in brown and green, and the feet are highlighted with blue lines. Historic Deerfield also has a creamware example of this duck sauceboat, HD 2006.33.83.

Subjects:
Pottery; glaze (coating by location)
